tiles were the essential element of the Ottoman aesthetic. they were the most common luxury when the empire was at its peak just like the mosaics were for the Romans. you can still see many fascinating examples around the palaces, mansions, mosques. the most dominant themes were the floral (esp. tulips), geometrical ones.
